Fleeting Fridays- Edition #2

Fleeting Fridays- Edition #2

And this is how it happens! Today is Friday again….. another one of those Fleeting Fridays… and the day has almost gone.

beauty, small things, thoughts, see, reflectingmama, reflecting, gratitude, thankfulness, thankful, grateful, seeing, fleeting friday, cat, cats

This was our Fleeting Friday: taking the cat to the vet, collecting her all drowsy and sore- minus 4 teeth, Pilates class, shopping for frames, lunch with hubby, wrapping presents, visiting post office, school drop-off and pickup, homemade pizza and video night.

We really need to slow down and start to notice. No matter how busy our days are. It’s a completely new way of living. As much as it tests my patience to the limit, my 5 year old daughter is fantastic at this! She takes notice of every little interesting thing that catches her eye as she walks past. And it’s amazing how observant she is (and how much I miss completely!). We can all teach ourselves to look for the little things, tiny pieces of beauty in our day, in our world. Seeing those things can make your days incredible. You can feel amused and grateful and blessed and happy!

Tonight, my husband noticed the cat on our wooden chopping board. Well, that was enough of a tiny beauty to make this whole day wonderful!!

Happy Fleeting Friday lovely people xx

Finding People to Be Real With -R U OK?

Finding People to Be Real With -R U OK?

Thanks to a good friend of mine, I remembered that today in Australia, it’s “R U OK” day. The amazing organization R U OK encourages all of us to ask friends, relatives, or anyone we come in contact with “Are you OK?”. Their website mission statement tells us they are “a suicide prevention charity that aims to start life-changing conversations. We want to create a more connected world”. Isn’t that something we could all be part of?

So, especially today, I want to share part of my story, an insight into real life as a new mother. Though I’m not brand new at this caper anymore, my memory of that time is still very clear! And this can also apply to any situation in life and any friendship in life. We all have a need to be able to share ourselves honestly and openly. Exactly as we are. To be able to shine, or not, to be able to show our awful sides as well as our wonderful sides. And for people to love us anyway. This is what true friendships and relationships are about.

Looking for reality

So this was my search- to find something on the internet about the difficulties of early motherhood that I was experiencing. An explanation for the not-knowing-anything kind of feeling! And preferably in the form of a verse or poem that could speak to my soul. I desperately wanted to know that there were other people out there that were having the same kind of days (and nights) that I was. What I found were lovely poems and sayings about the wonder of being a parent and loving your child. But nothing to do with the flip side of the coin, the real deal of being a new parent. This was not what I needed. I wanted to know I was normal. That I was OK!

Looking for connection

Connection, and being able to be real are both such vital parts of our lives. That feeling of being accepted, and the ability to relate to others stories is just amazing, and can get you through even the toughest of days. Being able to speak to someone can really make the difference. In Australia there are so many fantastic organizations like Beyond Blue and Lifeline whom you can ring day or night- to speak to someone and to be heard. We all have the ability to be that friend for someone else too, to ask them if they’re OK, and to really listen. For them, it might just change their life.

Well, I wonder today- R U OK?

Fleeting Fridays- Edition #1

Fleeting Fridays- Edition #1

Welcome to Edition #1 of Fleeting Fridays…..

Why do we feel we have to rush through Fridays? Is it rushing to get to the weekend? Those blissful days of rest, relaxation, family fun, jobs around the garden that have been waiting all week! Or is it simply because we’ve had enough of work and stress and packing school lunches?

In one year, we will have wanted to “just get through” 52 Fridays…. doesn’t that seem like a waste?

Wouldn’t you love to make every day count? Every day meaningful.  And every day a little magical? I’m sure we all want to be able to see the lighter side of life, something beautiful, something funny or something inspiring, especially on Fridays! Today I’m going to stand and take a good look around me….. what can I see that is pleasing, that I can be thankful for, that can make me realize the beauty of this life?

With this in mind, every Friday I am going to share a snippet…. some thoughts to make us all pause, and enjoy this day for what it is……..a Fleeting Friday!

Do you Need to Find Time for Silence?

Do you Need to Find Time for Silence?

writing, write, poetry, quiet, silence, contemplation, reflection, reflecting, journalling, poet, author, creating, creative, creativity, thoughts, thinking, ideas

“How do you find the time…?” This question has got me thinking. Because it’s not only about time but also about silence….

Do you find time to do the things that are important to you? As a woman, a mother, a being who needs to express themselves in a meaningful and satisfying way? As with anything you’d like to/choose to/need to do, time is usually one of the most important factors. In all honesty, time is often the only deciding factor in whether something gets done or not! Between work, household chores and being there for family, there’s often little left….of anything….. time/ energy/ willpower to do something you enjoy.

It’s easy to feel so surrounded by people (little and big), possessions, activities, events, that silence is an elusive dream. Something you can never quite get a hold on. But it’s so essential- that silence and time and space- to have the opportunity to do something you love. Often you need it for your own sanity!

silence, reflection, reflectingmama.com, quiet, writing, meditating, quietnessSilence can come in so many forms…. stillness, quietness, being able to focus just on one thing for a moment. Maybe inner ‘silence’ could be listening to your favorite track, played full volume and dancing like a crazy woman around the lounge! It’s that chance to just be yourself, your very own being and to revel in that time, no matter how short!

Unless I make time for creativity, thinking and writing, unless I schedule it into my daily routine- it disappears. It’s as if the very act of not paying silence any attention, makes it shy away and hide amongst the noise and rabble of life. However, when you can carve out that time for silence, thoughts assemble, creativity begins to flow and amazing things can happen.

Be Brave and Dare to Take that Step

Be Brave and Dare to Take that Step

A step: apart from the obvious definition of lifting and moving your foot, a step is also defined by dictionary.com as: ‘a move, act, or proceeding, as toward some end‘. Now this is what I’m talking about!

Moving in a direction ‘toward some end’- whatever the outcome might be… just moving….

How good is it to feel your body moving? After a couple of years of very little exercise (apart from walking), I’ve finally started doing pilates at my local Your Fitness gym. What an amazing feeling of freedom. To be able to use muscles I’d forgotten existed (even when they’re reminding me of their existence days later!). That fantastic realization that your body can learn to do something new. And to feel fully alive.

It can be really hard taking that step to start doing something new or differently, or thinking about things from a different perspective. Moving somewhere you haven’t been before. It’s scary…. you don’t know what to expect. You can’t always know in advance if things will work out (maybe I’ll become a world expert in pilates) or whether you’ll just end up with aching muscles!! But then again, if you don’t be brave and take that step, you will never know the joy and fulfillment that it may bring.

And so, this is what today’s poem is about.

Moving…. Feeling brave….. Taking that Step

Sunflowers and happier thought patterns

Sunflowers and happier thought patterns

sunflowers

And we’re back! A couple of weeks of no internet has left plenty of time to think, dream and write. And therefore also time to enjoy our beautiful sunflowers, finally unfurling their petals to display their golden faces of happiness!

One thing I’ve been reflecting on, is how easy it is to get into a pattern of thinking that isn’t helpful or productive. And this type of thinking very rarely leads anywhere useful! Sometimes it seems easier to just be who you’ve always been and think how you’ve always thought and never question any of that.

Yet, there is wonderful news. Neuroscientists are sharing their discoveries. As well as being able to create our own thought obstacles, we are also able to make a mindset shift that will lead us to healthier thinking. And positive thinking patterns allow our brains to find a much better perspective on all aspects in life!

But… it takes effort to change the way we think.

It takes effort to discover new interests and talents.

It takes effort to become all that we were created to be.

Putting in the effort is so worthwhile. It’s about getting onto that new track, with new thought patterns and a new direction towards fulfilling your true potential!

Ebb and Flow- Life and the Ocean

Ebb and Flow- Life and the Ocean

Today’s poem is reflecting more of my thoughts about deciding on directions in life ….. the first part of my journey in creating this blog.

I love spending time in nature, especially living here in the tropics. The rainforest is brimming with lush greenery, vibrant, brilliant colored flowers are everywhere, and the ocean is peaceful and calming. Nature is so fragile and beautiful. And life too is fragile and beautiful.

For me (and I’m sure for many of you too) life is sometimes flowing smoothly. Everything is going to plan. Children are behaving. Dishes are done. Thoughts and plans are clear.

And sometimes it is a struggle. Getting up is hard. Dealing with motherhood is hard. Making decisions is hard.

But…. just like the ebb and flow of the ocean, we know that one part of life cannot exist without the other.

And that can always give us hope.

Ebb and Flow

The first step: CHOOSE to start something new

The first step: CHOOSE to start something new

Sometimes, life throws things at you…. you know exactly what you should be doing, when and for what reason.

Other times, even after thinking, praying and meditating, the direction is still not clear.

This is when you need to CHOOSE to start….

Start heading in the direction that seems the right one. And doors will open, opportunities will arise and things will start falling into place (or not- in which case you head for plan B!!).

This is one of my first poems, about the struggle (and procrastination) of starting something new:

Hello world!

Hello world!

Hello and welcome!

I’m sNJ faceo excited that you’re here to share this journey………

I love thinking and reflecting on life, as a woman, mother and wife (also I love to rhyme!). Here you will find reflections, mainly written as poetry. Some topics will be heavy and deep, about our thoughts and motherhood and what makes us who we are…. others will be lighthearted and a laugh at life & experiences.

I really hope these writings speak to you and you can see yourself reflecting in them. Feel free to comment- I would love to hear your feedback and share in your life stories.

xx Nicola
